Vietnam Startup Deals Insight 2016

2017-03-22 15:53:30
For Startup investment in Vietnam, 2016 is a tale of 2 cities, while experiencing a drop in total number of dealflow, it was a vibrant year for total investment value, increasing almost 50% compared to last year, of over $200m. The market is fresh and still full of opportunities.

Most of the dealflow comes from early stage funding (Seed and Series A), with some big deals going to F88 (Mekong Capital - $10M), and GotIt (Capricorn - $9.1M). Sweet spot continued to be in the medium-sized investments (<$ 5M), unchanged since 2015.

The breakout sector was Fintech (no surprise) with more than $129M poured in. This sector is continuing its stellar performance at press time. Notable deals went to Payoo, E-pay, Momo, and F88.

Edtech also grew strongly last year, topping $20M with 6 deals, ranking a distant second to Fintech in terms of deal values. Maintaining a strong presence in the ecosystem was E-Commerce with 12 deals but lower deal value.

With yet another year of strong performances, 2016 was just a peak to the vast potential of startups in Vietnam, and this augurs very positively for 2017.

So what makes a Startup stand out?
